Start with the sleep habits that have the strongest footing

For most adults, aim for at least seven hours of sleep and keep your wake time reasonably consistent. Going to bed earlier or spending more time in bed is not automatically better if it does not match your sleep need or daily schedule.

Make the bedroom dark and quiet, and keep it comfortably cool. HealthCentral reports that experts from UCLA Health say to keep your room on the cool side, about 60 to 65 degrees; your comfort matters too.

If bright light or stimulating activity makes it harder to wind down, reduce it near bedtime. When practical, reserve your bed for sleep so that getting into it remains associated with rest.

When you cannot change the room itself, a sleep mask can help block unwanted light. The Dream Mask in Midnight Navy has a 100% mulberry silk shell, cloud-like padding, deep contoured eyecups and an adjustable strap; it is priced at $69.99.
